Pilates as we know it today, was created by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 20th century. Originally termed Contrology, Mr. Pilates created a system of exercises to be performed on the mat or special apparatus such as reformer, pole/tower, cadillac or chair.
Pilates provides a full body workout by incorporating diaphragmic breathing, uniform development of the spine and muscles and creating brain to body connections.
Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on strengthening the core muscles, improving posture, and increasing flexibility. It involves a series of controlled movements that challenge the body while also promoting relaxation and mindfulness.
I first discovered Pilates after my oldest son was born and I was looking for an activity that was just for ME. Scheduled time out of the house was the question and Pilates became the answer. From that day forward, Pilates has always held a special place in my heart. Growing up as a dancer, movement in various forms was always important to me. And then in later years through my university career, Sciences and Geography held my attention. So, when Pilates made its way into my life, it became the perfect marriage of both movement and science.
When I decided to make a career out of my passion, I completed the 850+ hour program from Pilates From the Centre in North Vancouver, BC, studying under Matilda Christenson and Veronica McClurg. Through this classically based, intensive program, I also studied Pilates anatomy and body mechanics which developed my skills for teaching functional movement within the framework of the Classical Pilates Method.
There are so many benefits of Pilates. Learning to breathe correctly, strengthening your body in alignment, finding uniform development in your spine and muscles are just a few of the benefits you'll experience when you practice Pilates regularly.
